Time for an Update

Well it has been a few weeks but i am finally back

First of all i would like to thank Murray Cook for his message. It means a lot that a person so high on the groundskeeping totum pole read my blog. I would also like to thank the person who read my blog and forwarded it to Murray.

I spent the last weekend in April up in San Francisco at the Giants vs. Reds series. I was finally able to meet up with assistant head groundskeeper Steve Dedo who has been helping guide me with advice and support through emails. I was able to see some great pitching from Edinson Volquez and some not so great pitching in Barry Zito. The Cal Poly Mustangs season is slowly winding down which is sad because i love working the games out there on the field. Cal Poly just beat Fullerton today at Goodwin park in Fullerton 11-4 and they are hoping to finish the season strong with home games against Pepperdine, and Longbeach State. Then they finish their season off on the road against UC Riverside.

I have an unique and exciting opportunity rapidly approaching. On June 4th i will have a chance to shaddow the AT&T park groundscrew through gameday against the mets. I cant thank Steve Dedo enough for the offer. This will probably go down as the best day in my life so far. So that will be amazing and i will be shure to post a nice blog about that date after it happens.

Once Cuesta College ends on the 23rd of May, I am shooting to get a job at the San Luis Obispo Country Club as a greens keeper. I have established a connection between Cal Poly's head honcho Bob Schneiderman, and the country club. so hopefully that works out.

I should probably give the Cuesta College baseball team a shoutout considering they are ranked # 2 in the southern california region of the community college state playoffs. They beat 2006 state champions Palomar yesterday at Cuesta Field, and are looking to continue their recent dominance.

Thanks again to all the people who have helped get me where i am as i continue my trek towards the world of MLB green thumbs.

Introduction Blog

Hello readers,

My name is Sam Titchener and this is the first of hopefully many blogs. A little introduction of myself. I am 18 years old, and i am a freshman at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo California. I love baseball and i am a Giants fan. After Cuesta College i plan to transfer to Cal Poly and major in Environmental Horticulture with an emphasis on turf management. I want to use this degree to become a groundskeeper in MLB or MILB. It would be a dream come true for that team to be the SF Giants. If you are a groundskeeper in any aspect and you wish to share any knowledge or stories with me i would definately appreciate it. It seems like a lot of people dont quite understand what goes into getting a major league baseball field ready to play on, im not even sure if i quite understand it fully. But i know from my experience with Cal Poly and from my summer days of groundskeeping for the Humboldt Crabs collegiate semi-pro team, that a lot goes into making a field look nice and play well. I am a perfectionist and i am a server. By server i mean that i get joy out of contributing to the good of the team. I get a lot of satisfaction out of my work on the field and my favorite part of the game is looking at the field when i first walk into the stadium. I first fell in love with baseball fields as a youngster taking a tour of AT&T park, all i wanted to look at was the process of mowing the infield. i knew that this was what i wanted to do with my life. If you have any comments, suggestions or any questions let me know. til next time, stay sharp.
